Understanding the behavior of wood or timber as an historic engineering material is essential for making well-informed repair and replacement decisions. Wood species and the variability of related strength and stiffness properties affect the performance of the material. Having material information, coupled with assessment technologies and thoughtful interpretation of the information and data, a better picture of what is working in light of engineering parameters is possible. This presentation of technical data and discussion of the behavior and means of assessing wood and timber will enable a better understanding of timber in preservation engineering.
