APT 2019 Miami Workshop
Conservation of Modern Concrete and Terrazzo Flooring Workshop
November 20-21, 2019

This two-day workshop focused on the approach to the preservation of modern concrete and cement-based terrazzo flooring systems. The workshop, sponsored by the APT Technical Committee on Modern Heritage, included presentations with integrated case studies, a studio visit with demonstrations by craftsmen, and a mini laboratory. Specific topics included historical overview and preservation approach, assessment and nondestructive testing, laboratory studies, concrete and terrazzo cleaning and repairs (including matching modern historic concrete), corrosion mitigation, and protection. The visit to a working studio included demonstrations by conservators and contractors with extensive experience with historic concrete and terrazzo flooring. The demonstrations were hands-on and allowed attendees to closely interact with the craftsman to allow for questions on techniques.
